Vintage Mid-Century Danish Modern Rosewood Bookcase Cabinet by Poul Hundevad for Hundevad & Co, 1960s
£1,395
Description
This high bookcase was designed by Danish designer Poul Hundevad and manufactured by Poul Hundevad & Co. during the 1960s. It is finished with high-quality noble rosewood in a dark shade of brown. The bookcase has six shelves whose height can be adjusted. The shelves have a cut-shaped edge on the front. Among other things, this detail creates a visually attractive form of furniture. The cabinet is placed on a geometric base. The piece of furniture will work in many rooms: as a library, a complement to the living room or in the office. It is practical and functional, reflecting the aesthetics of Danish modernism.
Poul Hundevad was a Danish designer who liked to combine old traditions with modernity. Like other Mid-Century designers, he was inspired by the past, referring not only to a long tradition of exceptional carpentry, but also to designs from other eras. In the case of Hundevad, it was an object from a very distant past that contributed to his greatest success. In 1960, he began producing his most famous work, the Guldhøj chair. The project was a copy of a folding chair found in a barrow in Vamdrup, dating back to the Scandinavian Bronze Age. It was the oldest surviving piece of furniture in Scandinavia. Hundevad measured the original chair, refined the design and put it into production using four different types of wood and leather seats in light and dark shades. The chair was an immediate success and was sold worldwide. The name Hundevada has become the quintessence of Danish design. He looked to the past, remaining faithful to traditional crafts and techniques, while creating modern works.
The bookcase is in original vintage condition. It has minor traces of age, scrapes. Hole drilled in the back board, probably for a cable. One of the shelves has regular holes.
