Description
John Herbert must have joined A Younger than marketing themselves as Crown Furniture in around 1955. His first design was a range that didn’t take off, but his second one for the solid afrormosia Volnay range in 1956 certainly did. It was still being offered in their 1967 catalogue which gave it an amazing longevity for a successful design at the time. It may not have been modern compared to some of Robin Day’s designs for Hille but it was modern enough to stand out from the crowd at the time, yet safe enough not to frighten middle class buyers. It wasn’t Danish it was 100% solidly British, but different. Every year more designs appeared from John Herbert’s fertile brain, some more traditional than others, and some more successful than others. In the early 1960’s he came up with some wonderful sleek designs that were unlike anything coming from Scandinavia or from other British designers.
