Bengt Orup (1916 – 1996) was a Swedish artist, glass designer and a pioneer of Swedish post-war modernism. He studied at the Otte Sköld Art School in Stockholm. In 1938, Orup continued his studies in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere and Académie Colarossi. While in Paris in 1938, he took part in an exhibition at the Institut Tessin. In 1946, Orup returned to Paris for a year, where he first experimented with pure, geometric shapes together with Art Concret. Art Concret is an avant-garde group of artists that was founded in Paris in 1929 and championed geometric abstract art, closely related to the aesthetics of neoplasticism. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Orup created a series of l’art concrete paintings that featured refined geometric shapes and strong contrasts. In 1950 he received a scholarship from the Skåne Art Association, and in 1952 he became the new artistic director of Johansfors Glasbruk (a Swedish glass manufacturer founded in 1891) in Småland. Orup was artistic director there until 1968, when he was invited as a guest professor at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1969 he had a solo (glass) exhibition at the Greenwich Theater Gallery. Orup retired from the steelworks in 1970, returned to Domsten and painted. He exhibited numerous exhibitions throughout his life, and examples of his works can be found in museums and collections around the world, including: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, L’Institut Tessin in Paris, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Halland Art Association, Johansfors Crystal Museum, Malmo Museum, Stockholm National Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Ystad Art Museum.
