Gaston Chaissac (1910 – 1964), was a French painter. During his stay in Paris, a chance meeting with the painters Otto Freundlich and Jeanne Kosnik-Kloss, helped him find his way and start an artistic career. Thanks to them, he exhibited his works for the first time in Paris in 1938. Only two other exhibitions were held during his lifetime. One in 1947 supported by Jean Dubuffet and the other in 1961. It was then that his work was finally appreciated by the Parisian artistic community.
Chaissac’s graphics are both playful and powerfully raw. His drawings and paintings are filled with primitive, childish figures built from a patchwork of wild colored elements, defined and held together by restless black contours. This distinctive, visual mode of collage extended to three-dimensionality in sculptures and sets made of found objects and materials: cans, brooms, branches and rocks. His process consisted in the constant renewal of what was rejected and everyday life as a transfer of creative energy.
Original vintage condition. This lithograph was also on the Galerie des Ponchettes in France in 1976 inviting to the Chaissac exhibition.
