French Secretaire Commode by CH. Jeanselme
£1,795
Description
A beautiful piece of French furniture from a quality maker, this has the label for CH. Jeanselme of Paris inlaid into the top drawer by the lock. Charles-Henry continued the family business, which had supplied to the French and Imperial courts, from 1883. This secretaire commode has a grey marble top with white streaks and the second drawer is fitted with a drop front with a brass holding mechanism, a brown tooled leather writing surface and four small burr walnut fronted drawers. It has some wonderful carving and panelling, including a palm trunk design at the sides and a wonderfully tactile tiny beading around the drawer fronts. A lovely quality piece which will work well as an occasional laptop desk as well as providing plenty of storage and a good display surface.
Dating to circa 1900, this is made of walnut and originates from France.
In good age related condition, the marble has some tiny edge nibbles, but these are very minor and unobtrusive. The key is available and works in the top and two lower drawers, but does not appear to turn in the secretraire section, although the lock is present.
