Description
Superb coffee table designed by François Monnet and produced by Kappa in the 70s in France, curved metal and smoked glass in excellent condition.
François Monnet (b. 1946) grew up during the 1960s and was inspired by the artistic atmosphere of the time. A multitude of powerful changes were also taking place in the art world. Pop Art, by adopting mass media culture through the works of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann, was gradually breaking the foundations on which the production and reception of art were built.
Inspired by the imagery of popular culture and mass consumerism, Pop Artists rejected the authority of intellectual art and created an avant-garde movement, while Minimalism, which appeared at the same time, rejected any form of emotional manifestation and focused on the characteristics art theorists – aspiring to pure visual responses.
Simplicity and emptiness of emotion were key concepts in the highly influential Minimalism movement, embodied by artists such as Frank Stella, Donald Judd and Agnes Martin. Uninterested in the gestural elements of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalist artists focused on making artwork composed primarily of clean, shiny lines and geometric elements.
Very rare piece from Kappa production, perfect condition, only 2 tiny scratches on the glass as shown in the photos but imperceptible, and no chipping.
