Description
An elegant scholar’s inkwell decorated in Koftgari work, which is a form of the Damascene technique, this Indian piece is delightful. It has a folding easel style support, with two front curving legs which end in pretty feet. The inkwell itself is a sphere which pivots between open and closed positions and the top is finished with a candlestick to give the scholar light. The whole has a highly patinated finish which has not been cleaned to retain originality, making it difficult to see the extensive Koftgari decoration beneath, but this is most visible on the band decorating the sphere when this is in the open position and the detail across the piece is beautiful and extensive.
Dating to the 19th century, this is made of steel and originates from India.
In good age related condition, this has a heavily patinated surface which has not been cleaned.
